Alaska Wedding Photographer – Clarkie Photography

Alaska – ‘the last frontier’

That’s what all the license plates on the cars say. I imagine people who are lucky enough to grow up here might be somewhat immune to the accuracy of those few words, comparative to other places in the US. I realise I was there in the summer, during which time I only saw ‘night time’ a couple of times (the sun would rise at 4am and set just before 1am) and I am acutely aware that winter offers a different set of challenges will only a few hrs of daylight. But for those of us who didn’t have the fortune to grow up in a place like this, the sheer beauty of this place can be quite overwhelming. I spent a few days exploring after the wedding. I saw and did some incredible things.

Finding out last year that Jess & Dakota were interested in working with me for their wedding was exciting enough, as I hadn’t long been in LA and booking new weddings was worth celebrating. For the details to then slowly unfold and reveal to me that this was to be an Alaska Wedding and the location was to be the resort town of Girdwood just south of Anchorage, well that was a bit special.

Crow Creek Mine Wedding Alaska

Jess and Dakota’s Alaska Wedding at Crow Creek Mine was brilliant in every way. I don’t think I’ve laughed so much during a wedding whilst at the same time being mesmorized by all the emotional moments which unfolded during the day. There is one frame in this set which I really love. It’s Jess wiping away the tear from Dakota’s cheek during the vows. I must admit that I spent the hours after the ceremony kicking myself for missing the tear. You see, there was a shot just seconds before which I felt I could have got – but I didn’t. I saw Jess reach out, raised my camera and then the tear was gone. When I looked at the images later that night I realised I had been quicker than I thought. As it turns out, I might have captured something better.

Jess and Dakota grew up in Alaska. They live in LA now. Lucky for all of us, it’s just a 5 hour flight from LAX.

Thanks to both of you for a once in a lifetime experience.
